What can you do to help yourself?

This chapter is mainly for those readers who harm themselves. The suggestions aren’t just about ways of stopping your self-harming. They are also about how you can start on the road to feeling better about yourself. If you are a friend or family member of somebody who self-harms you may also find some of this useful so that you can provide support to the person you know.

Remember: nothing in self-harm applies to everybody so don’t be downhearted if you don’t find what you want here, or if you feel that you’ve tried this already and it did not help. Sometimes it’s worth going back to things you’ve tried before – it is important to have another go. The fact that you are reading this means that you want to be well, and to be well it is vital that you try things rather than giving up. Think of it as an experiment. And remember that it’s not a catastrophe if it doesn’t work. Tell yourself : ‘I am not a personal failure just because this one thing doesn’t work for me. It was worth a try.’

If you really feel that you have tried as hard as you can and gone as far as you can with trying to help yourself, and you are still in trouble, you must get help. There are later chapters on how to seek outside help.
